Why Summer Can Increase Muscle Tension More Than You Think (And How to Prevent It During Travel)

June 1, 2026

Summer is often associated with relaxation, vacations, and spending more time outside—but for many people, it can actually be one of the hardest seasons on the body.

Between long car rides, flights, yard work, outdoor activities, and changes in routine, summer can leave you feeling tighter, more fatigued, and more uncomfortable than expected.

The good news? A few simple habits can help keep your body feeling better all season long.

Why Summer Activities Cause More Tension

During the summer, people tend to become more active without always preparing their bodies for the increase in movement.

Common summer activities that can increase muscle tension include:

Spending long hours sitting in cars or airplanes, long road trips, flying and travel days, carrying luggage or beach gear, gardening and yard work, hiking and outdoor sports, or sleeping in unfamiliar beds while traveling.

Even fun activities can place repetitive stress on the body—especially when combined with dehydration and heat.

Travel Can Be Hard on Your Body

One of the biggest contributors to summer tension is travel.

Sitting for long periods can:

  • Tighten hip flexors
  • Increase neck and shoulder tension
  • Reduce circulation
  • Cause low back discomfort
  • Increase stiffness in the legs and calves

Research has shown that prolonged sitting can contribute to muscle tightness and discomfort, especially in the hips and lower back. Regular movement and stretching can help reduce these effects.

The Importance of Hydration

Summer heat and travel can also increase dehydration—which directly affects muscle function.

When your body is dehydrated, muscles may:

  • Cramp more easily
  • Fatigue faster
  • Feel tighter or more sore
  • Recover more slowly

Hydration plays a major role in circulation, tissue health, and recovery.

Simple Stretches for Road Trips and Travel

The best thing you can do while traveling is move your body regularly.

Here are a few easy stretches that can help during summer travel:

Neck Stretch

Gently tilt your ear toward your shoulder and hold for 20–30 seconds on each side. This is great for Driving tension, airman stiffness, and “tech neck”.

Hip Flexor Stretch

Step one foot forward into a gentle lunge while keeping your chest upright. This is great after long card rides, sitting all day, and general lower back tightness

Seated Figure Four Stretch

While seated, place one ankle over the opposite knee and gently lean forward. You can use this for Glute tension, hip stiffness, or sciatic pain.

Calf Stretch

Stand facing a wall with one foot back and press the heel into the floor. Use this when you have minor swelling during travel, walking fatigue or leg tightness.

Other Ways to Reduce Summer Muscle Tension

A few small habits can make a huge difference:

Drink more water than you think you need
Take movement breaks during long drives
Stretch before and after activities
Use foam rollers or massage tools at home
Prioritize sleep while traveling
Schedule recovery time after vacations or busy weekends

Massage Can Help You Recover Faster

Massage therapy can be especially helpful during the summer months because it:

  • Supports circulation
  • Helps reduce muscle tension
  • Encourages relaxation
  • Assists recovery after activity or travel
  • Helps your nervous system slow down

Many clients notice they feel tighter during summer simply because they are more active and busier overall.

Summer is meant to be enjoyed

That doesn’t mean your body won’t feel the effects of all the extra activity.

By staying hydrated, stretching regularly, and making time for recovery, you can help prevent many of the aches and pains that tend to show up this time of year.

And if your body is already feeling the effects of summer travel and activities, massage therapy can help get you back to feeling your best.
